BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a semi-autonomous organization within the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) with financial and operational independence from regional and district operations, including 12 Timber Sales Offices (TSO’s). BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS is responsible for providing credible reference price and cost benchmark data for the market pricing system (MPS) through auctions of public timber.
Seedling Services manages BC Timber Sales’ inventory of seed and the acquisition, distribution and storage of seedlings for BCTS and other government clients. More than 60 million seedlings are managed annually at nursery locations throughout the province to meet the reforestation objectives of Forests for Tomorrow, District Operations and BCTS planting programs. High quality forest and environmental management practices are integral to the way BC Timber Sales conducts business. Seedling Services plays a significant role in supporting the sustainable forest management principles, goals and objectives of BC Timber Sales by providing quality seedlings to meet reforestation obligations, and through programs such as Forests for Tomorrow to reforest crown land affected by fire, mountain pine beetle and other natural events.
This position provides sound professional and scientific seed and seedling (seed/seedlings) knowledge, advice and guidance respecting the planning and acquisition of seed/seedlings from public and private suppliers to meet BCTS’ reforestation goals. Working with the 12 Timber Sales Offices (TSO), seedling services and private nursery staff located throughout the province, the Forester develops and administers seed/seedling production contracts. This position also functions as the Nursery and Shipping Administration (NSA) and Jasper systems custodian responsible for understanding the seed/seedling business and capitalizing on opportunities for IT to further business goals. The incumbent maintains an awareness of seed/seedling trends and availability in order to ensure a secure and steady seed/seedling supply for BCTS. In addition, the Forester will take on other duties as needed to support seedling services’ business plan, such as, but not limited to conducting seedling quality inspections and assessments.
