BC Timber Sales (BCTS) was founded in 2003 with a mandate to provide the cost and price benchmarks for timber harvested from public land in British Columbia.  BCTS plans, develops, and auctions as much as 20% of the province’s annual available volume.  The bid prices received from auctioned timber and costs of developing the timber are available to support market pricing of the province’s timber.  BCTS is an autonomous organization within the Ministry with staff located in the headquarters unit in Victoria and in the 12 Business Areas (BAs), which are geographically dispersed throughout the province.  Despite its operational and financial independence, BCTS remains a proud part of the Natural Resource Sector and maintains mutually productive and beneficial relations with all other parts of the Ministry.

BCTS has one primary goal and three objectives that are guided by the overriding principles of safety sound forest management and effective relationships BCTS:

Goal:   To provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the market pricing system through auctions of public timber.

  1. Sell the full BCTS allowable annual cut over the business cycle, consistent with sustainable forest management.
  2. Generate net direct revenue and indirect provincial government revenue over the business cycle.
  3. Pursue continuous business improvement within BCTS, across government and with third party partners and customers.

BCTS is committed to the safety of all people affected by its operations which is demonstrated by the achievement of SAFE Company certification.  Sound forest management is another commitment of BCTS.  BCTS is the largest tree planter in the province and has achieved and maintained certification of an Environmental Management System in all BAs under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001) and achieving Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) certification over 100% of its operating areas.

Some of the Engineering Specialist’s responsibilities are planning and coordinating the engineering program within the BA; development of operational plans; and meeting program objectives.  Specific accountabilities include forest road and bridge engineering design coordination and review, senior professional advice and guidance on resource road authorizations, development and implementation of the engineering budget.

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:

  • A degree or diploma in forest engineering, forest management, engineering or equivalent related field and two years (gained within the last five years) of experience in road, bridge and major structures design, construction and maintenance.
    An equivalent combination of education and experience such as five years (gained within the last ten years) of experience in road, bridge and major structures design, construction and maintenance.

  • Applicants must be registered or eligible for registration with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals (ABCFP) as a:

o Registered Forest Technologist,

  • Experience in contract and or project management.

  • Experience in managing complex road and or bridge construction projects.

  • Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.


  • Experience supervising staff.

  • Budget management or financial administration experience.


  • Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork.

  • Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.

  • Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.

  • Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and or rotary winged aircraft and or watercraft.

If you are not yet registered with the ABCFP, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a registered RFT member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to ABCFP
